A gothic tale of hunger, desire, and the things that lurk beneath the surface, Hungerstone by Kat Dunn is a sapphic reimagining of the classic vampire story Carmilla. When Lenore travels to a remote country estate with her husband, she hopes the change of scenery will help restore her health and their strained marriage. Instead, the arrival of a mysterious young woman named Carmilla coincides with a series of strange illnesses and unsettling events. As Lenore becomes increasingly drawn to her enigmatic new companion, it becomes harder to tell where fascination ends and danger begins.

We chose Hungerstone for October because, honestly, spooky season demanded something with a little bite. But beneath its gothic atmosphere and deliciously eerie premise, the novel gives us plenty to sink our teeth into: desire, identity, repression, obsession, and the complicated ways we hunger for connection. It felt like the perfect book to curl up with as the nights grow longer and an especially fun one to share with our bookish little coven. 🦇📚🌙
